Has anyone here ever gotten into UPenn/Wharton while telling AP calc abbduring their senior year. My school offers BC but I am on track to take AB my senior year.
Yes.
Shockingly, some applicants have gotten in with non -AP calculus or (gasp) no calculus. AB vs. BC will not be a make-or-break in any application. Good luck.
Yes, absolutely. Calculus AB is the math expected for Wharton but ole students get in even without it. However an A will be expected.
Thank you skieurope and MYOS1634 for Answering. I really appreciate it!
BC is preferred. Someone reported that Penn called the school and asked whey the applicant took AB instead of BC.
@SRK6782 I am accepted into UPenn without any calculus at all (I am taking precalc now as a senior in high school). Note: I am admitted at the College of Art and Science, so I don’t know how indicative this is to someone applying for Wharton. PM me if you have any question for me about applying to Penn or just college in general.
Last year, everyone from my son’s high school who applied to Penn got rejected (like 7). What we heard is that when the guidance counselors asked why, the explanation given was that they all took AP Calc AB instead of BC. I don’t think whether they have BC calc knowledge is important but whether they feel the kids are challenging themselves to the fullest extent. That said, I think at least one student was admitted this year who took AB (was not in my son’s BC class) so it can’t be a showstopper.
As I have said many times, the plural of anecdote is note data.
The GCs are guessing, since Penn AOs will not provide a reason for rejection.
That said, my opinion (and it’s only an opinion) is that the transcript will be viewed in context and that an AO knows the difference between being on track for AB versus opting for AB despite being eligible for BC. AOs will not ding an applicant because they were not placed on the math fast track in 6th grade or because a particular HS has a curriculum which does not offer BC or does not makes it impossible to reach BC without summer work. While some students will take a summer class to accelerate, there is also something to be said for doing something non-academic, but still productive, over the summer. Welcome to holistic admissions.
My son was accepted ED into the college of arts and sciences while he was taking AB.
