Dear CC'ers,

I have currently only taken up to Algebra 2 and I have been offered a spot in AP Calc. Should I take it? I'd take it concurrently with Pre-Calc. Note: I'd be a sophomore so it would be a huge honor at my high school to take calculus so early

Can you take Pre-Calc over the summer so you arre ready for AP?

In my opinion, pre-calc was just a review of algebra concepts with a few new ones. To be ready, you should get the book and review/learn the new stuff over the summer. The most “calc” my pre-calc class got was introducing the concept of the derivative. That may be because it was trig & pre-calc…

Take trig over the summer and make sure you’re comfortable with the definition of a derivative.

I would suggest taking calc junior year, and taking another rigorous class sophomore year. that way you’re still ahead in math, but you won’t run out of classes and can still have a rigorous courseload

If I were you, I’d take Pre-Calc over the summer. It’ll just be too hard for you to do both Calc and Pre-Calc at the same time. In addition, if you don’t have a solid base, Calc might prove too difficult for you - which would be a hit to your GPA. If you take Pre-Calc over the summer, you can still start Calc early during your soph year.

dude, calc is easy. im a freshman and im self studying it and taking the AP exam in a couple of weeks. You’ll do fine.

My school will not accept credit for it if it is done over the summer, but I can do it at Johns Hopkins CTY. Also I have the option of doing AP Stats or CompSci instead, but I was unsure due to the prestige of being in AP Calc as a sophomore.

I think [thanks to your help, it is very kind] I’ll do Pre-Calc over the summer and both in school [No way around having the both of them]

I wouldn’t do that, there’s plenty of time to take Calculus, your already ahead of 95% of students if your taking Pre-Calculus as a sophomore.
