AP Chemistry Self - Study

Thank you for your interest and time in advance. I would greatly appreciate your assitance and advice.

I don't know dude, the content in AP Chemistry's pretty hard to handle even when you take the class. Besides, why don't you self-study some of the "lighter" AP's like the Economics and History ones, that is much more realistic. I guess it is possible WITH A LOT OF HARD WORK, ambition, and a lot of frustration. Anyway, if you are this morivated I am sure you want to go to an Ivy, which means that you should be spending more time on your EC's because those are what sets you apart from the crowd, not your AP Chemistry self-study. To sum it up, I would say that unless you're a math genius(USAMO level) and got like an A+ in regular Chemistry, don't try to self-study AP.

I was planning on self studying this too so that I can do more years of computer science, but it looks like too much work. I couldn't self study Calc BC, no. So it looks like I'm taking the Spanish HL exam... sigh

Yah, I'm just babbling on.

I don't know manonfire... I'm surely NO USAMO math genius (though I did have an A+ in regular chem) and I thought the AP chem class was actually pretty easy. Since our homework was almost never collected and graded (and if it was, we would be told the day before so we knew we had to do it) I did maybe 60% of the assignments; tied in with a first-year teacher (she was ok, about a 6/10 on a 10 point scale - not horrible but nothing amazing) and my extra studying for chem related ECs (NJ Science League, Olympiad) I managed to get a 5 pretty confidently. Yes, chem would be a harder AP to self-study, but it's nothing impossible. I don't mean to be a self-promoter, but I'm telling you, d-load the study guides my friend and I made throughout the year and it will do you wonders. Just ask the probaby 50+ people who d-loaded them for last minute study this year and for next year - they'll tell you they are awesome.

my son self studied AP chem successfully (5) and it didn't seem that bad. He's good at math, which helped with the problem solving. And chem doesn't involve a lot of memorizing, which worked in his favor. (Self-studying AP bio was much worse, and AP history, which he did not do, would have been worse still)

Get Zumdahl and a couple of AP review books. You'll know whether or not you are able to do it on your own well before you have to sign up for the exam.
