AP Computer Science A on VHS?

I am thinking about taking AP Comp Sci on VHS(my school doesn't offer it). Have any of you every taken the course? Is it a large workload? How many hours per week would you say it is? How does VHS work in general? How would I be graded for this class, etc?

I took the course last year. A VHS schedule is kind of funny. The ‘week’ runs from Wednesday to Wednesday. The teacher releases a week’s worth of work on Wednesday and you are expected to finish all the assignments by the following Tuesday at midnight. Many weeks, there are deadlines in the middle of the week (I often had to hand an assignment in on Friday). VHS also doesn’t give any breaks, with the exception of 3 weeks off at Christmas. This potentially be problematic if you are traveling for Thanksgiving or spring break, but the teachers are accommodating.

For Comp Sci, I had a teacher who graded reasonably, and the work load was perfect for an AP class. I don’t know if changes by the teacher, but there were 3 types of assignments: quizzes, discussion posts and programs. Programs and discussion posts make up about 80% of your grade. Discussion posts were graded solely on completion, while quizzes and programs were graded for accuracy. The amount of time you will spend on the work depends largely on your understanding of the material. They aim to give 8 hrs of work, but there were some weeks when I could cram all of the assignment in 6 hours over Monday and Tuesday night and others where I spent 10-12 hrs in the week trying to figure out what was going on.

Also, if you don’t have any experience with programming, this course will be a brain sapper. Unlike real school, if you fall behind or don’t understand something, the teacher won’t hold the material to let you catch up. There’s a lot more expectation on your end to make sure you understand the material.

Hope this helps =)

When you say Computer Science and VHS, most of what I think of is Video Game High School by Freddiew, even though I think it is spelled VGHS.

Am I getting too old when I thought this meant Video Home System like those cassettes? Damn, I’m only a rising senior too.

@Hawkace I was also thinking that, lol.
