AP Computer Science A self study

I’m really interested in learning more about programming and I wanted to take the AP computer science class offered at my high school. I wasn’t able to fit it into my schedule but I still want to learn it and take the exam this year. Is it possible to self study the course and receive a high score on the exam? Also, are there programs I would need to buy/download that would only be available to me through a teacher? thank you!

Hey! AP Computer Science is a great AP course and enhances your problem solving skills. I think it is very possible to self study AP Computer Science and receive a 5 on the AP Exam. First off, I recommend purchasing or borrowing a java methods book (or any textbook) from your school who has the AP class, or off on amazon. The textbook will help you gain those lurking small details of java that may be tested on the AP exam. I also recommend completing all of the practice problems on coding bat.com. Also purchase Barrons APCS and/or Litvins Be Prepared prepbooks to study for the actual exam. I would recommend looking at the edX.com computer science online classes. Remember to also code on your own time! Hope this helped!

My ap computer science class uses parts of a free textbook called blue pelican java that you can download as a pdf. We also use the free programs Greenfoot- which is more visual and easier to create stuff in right away, and Bluejay- which we use more often.

oh yes and coding bat is good, and theres another one my teacher had us do a little bit in, Codehunt, which is also a website. Its a little harder than codingbat

You could just learn how to code on your own (using free online resources) without following the AP curriculum

BEST website for self studying AP CS (I self studied it and got a 5) is edhesive.com ABSOLUTELY most helpful. I would also buy Barron’s AP CS review book.
