Plans for an Engineering Major with a Chinese Minor at Vandy. With these AP courses/scores

AP World 4
AP US History 5
AP Eng Comp 5
AP Calc AB 5
AP Stats 5
AP Econ ?
AP Govt ?
AP Calc BC ?
AP Physic ?

and, assuming at least a 4 on the Senior AP classes, here are my questions:

With the Engineering requirements of Chem/Chem Lab, Calculus, Engineering Module, is it too much to take beginning Chinese as a freshman? Opt for an Art History or other class that is not quantitative?

Calculus - I read the comments from Pancaked and Vandycentremom on another thread but wasn't sure what the reco would be with a 5 on Calculus BC (vs. AB).

Would all of these count for credit at Vandy?

Thank you!

Good news about the school of Engineering is you can accept all the credits (whereas A&S limits how many you can accept). Things like APUSH and Econ will get you out of some of the random liberal arts requirements you have to fulfill and make room for other electives that you actually want to take.

First thing to know is the engineering module is a generally blowoff class and you’re guaranteed an A with very little work, no tests. Anyways, it’s a judgement call. I wouldn’t say taking a language is “too much” but it certainly wouldn’t be the easiest option. No clue how difficult Chinese101 is, or if you have any experience in Chinese.

With a 5 on BC Calc I personally skipped 155a/b and went directly to 175. Math175 is challenging, but it doesn’t require an incredible amount of background calc knowledge. Teachers expect you to be able to integrate anything they throw at you without an issue- my teacher usually just skipped integration steps in class to save time, assuming we could do it easily. Good news is you don’t have to integrate anything ridiculous (occasional U substitution, no integration by parts). After just taking BC you’d certainly be prepared. Anyways, like I said, it’s a challenging course for your first semester of college but I think it’s preferable to suffering through 150 or 155. My student adviser recommended that I go to 175.

Thank you Pancaked! Very helpful. May I ask what is your area of concentration? Also, would you recommend 5 classes as a first semester freshman of Math, Chem, Eng, Chinese and something else? Or, just stick with 4 and add the freshmen eng seminar 2nd semester?
Did not get into the Freshmen Engineering Seminar.

I’m not sure if the engineering seminars are even offered second semester. There are so few spots it’s really hard to get into them.

Math, Chem, Intro to Eng, and Chinese is plenty. That’s probably 15-ish credit hours which is just what you should be looking for.

I’m in ChemE.
