AP English Literature (comments after test)

I also did ten pages of single-spaced, small-sized, non-BS commentary. I don't see what's so hard about it...

Wow.. I only wrote an average of 2 or 2.5 pages for each essay. My wrist started to cramp up. I'm not so good at writing a lot within a short period of time.

Neither am I, but this is AP time and if that doesn't make you pull out your biggest intellectual guns, I don't know what will....the LSAT? o_o

:p Considering they only have a few seconds at most to glance over your essay, 2 pages should sufface as long as you prove to them you can WRITE not just spit out vocab or quote like crazy.

"a few seconds"?

Try four minutes, two for each reader.

I hate MC on English exams. I think I have some genetic problem where I can't read a passage and answer questions. Whether they give me half an hour or two hours, I'll always end up with 5-10 unanswered Qs. :(

E1: Okay... 2.5 Pages. Should have been better, but still can't think what I would've done differently...
E2: Best one. 4 pages. It took me forever to write, but as soon as I started, ideas kept pouring in on me. :D
E3: Pretty good. 2 pages. Had to rush it a bit, but it turned out alright.
Shakespeare: Thank you for writing King Lear.

My mistake, I guess two minutes or 120 seconds should be enough time to read word for word your entire paper. Honestly, what I'm trying to get at is all you have to do is prove you can write. The # of pages really doesn't matter. I've seen PLENTY previous 9s or 8s of 1.5-2 pages from the samples they give.

lol knavish- it did help studying terms the night before. I hope that it salvages my exam grade. :p

Did everyone write so much? I wrote about 2 pages for each. Given, my handwriting is somewhat small, but fairly normal. If I had tried to write more, I would have just been repeating myself.

This is why I don't like this forum! It makes me second guess myself so much and dwell on things I could have done! Augh!!!

it doesnt matter how much you write, but rather the quality of what you write

I wrote 1.5 - 2 pages on each. I write very small and don't BS, though...we shall see. I'm hoping for a 5, but a 4 would be fine too.

MC - a tad difficult. That first story killed me at first. When I first read it, I just couldn't comprehend it at all, lol. But I got back to it once I "warmed up" on the other ones and understood it better.
1st and 3rd prompts - I think I did pretty well on these. I used Catcher in the Rye on the open ended...did anyone else?
2nd - eh...not as good, but still probably in the 5-6ish range. All my friends thought this was the hardest prompt, too.

Not to burst anyone's bubble or anything, but according to my AP English teacher, who has done tons of AP grading, most graders find it pretty irritating when the essays go beyond two full pages. I think the key is pretty much the three C's: Clear, Concise, and Complete.

Overall, though, not too horrible of a test. Except for that last poem in the MC...my brain, I think, was still slightly frazzled from the first excerpt (which took me forever to read before completely comprehending)

I agree w/ the above poster about essay length. All my essays were 4 paragraphs (have been all year) and I consistently pull 7s and 8s.

Tlaktan--you're not alone. I did Catch-22; Yossarian fit perfectly. I had read up some notes on it the night before, so I was able to throw in a couple direct quotes.

I'm hoping I got around 30-33 right on the MC (I answered 50). Then, if I get a combined essay total of 22 (which I think I can do definitely), I would just squeak by with a 4; I think my highest essay total would be 24, but more around 21-23), which is what I need to test out of the evil stadium-sized "expository writing" class at Rutgers... shudders

ouch... that means i blew my chances for a 5. If there was anything to prove in this world, me getting a 5 in the literature would have proved it.

I answered 54.. I had just resolved on my last decision, after probably thinking too long, and the proctor called time when I was about to shade. I thought about just dotting the oval, because doesn't that work? But, yeah.. I have no clue how many I got wrong. Can never tell on these damn MC's.

My essays were really, really short as well, but I packed them with details and insight (I hope).. So hopefully that turns out well. After reading that everbody here did like 3+ pages, I started to get scared.

Well, I'll probably stop caring about how I did on these AP tests in about a week.. at least until the scores come.

wow... my ap teacher did absolutely nothing to prepare us for this test, which i realize the minute i started the test. he treated the class like a regular honors class and didn't do any good in-depth analysis or anything with us. he made us read Blade Runner... yea, cause that helped a lot...

i'll be lucky if i get a 3, but oh well, can't get out of freshman english where i'm going anyhow

uber, same thing for me. None of us realized how screwed we were until last week when we saw our first AP exam sample page and noticed that we didn't know any of the vocab or how to answer the questions at all.

our teacher didn't prepare us at all either, so I depended on prep. books (on a subject i'm already weak on..). i knew it right from the start though: she made a really big fuss about how hard it is to get a five, and she things college board and kaplan are the same company.. but i hate to be mean; she was a really nice teacher, and my reading skills shot up.

I admire this forum's excessive verbosity. I am clearly not gifted with this talent as I wrote a total of 3 pages among all three essays(no joke). Good thing we are graded on quality rather than length.

1) I think I hit on all of the main contrasts. (I wrote 1 page)

2) I found the passage unusually unremarkable. I started off well, commenting on the ironic title, then slowly devolved into outright criticism. (I didn't even fill a page on this essay)

3) I'm pretty sure anyone who's read Invisible Man did pretty well with this topic. (I wrote a little over a page)

I did well enough altogether to acheive my goal of a 3 with no trouble. If I get any higher I will have to chastise myself for waisted effort as UCD only requires a 3 for credit. Regardless, I'm expecting a 4.

r2b2ct, although you hit what you needed to, there was more to the prompt.
