The College Board lost my D's AP Music Theory exam from last May. Early this fall they offered to a) either let her retake it (NOT on her life) or b) refund her money for the exam. So far we haven't seen a refund or even acknowledgement from them that they received her decision to take the refund. Anyone else have this experience? Anyone else received their refund?

I'm not normally a violent person, but when I read stories like this, I tend to think of, well, tactical nuclear weapons, anyone? (JK!) I do wonder, with the array of complaints, when the colleges will get disgusted enough to lose CB or replace them.

No, CB hasn't done that quite yet with us. They did, however, attempt to convince several students that the reason for their official AP scores being delayed was that the same students who earned "5's" on the exams somehow must have struggled with how to fill in the bubbles correctly.

Very amusing. They're into CYA major.

I know it's not funny to you, esp. since that's such a bear of a subject to begin with. I would keep writing letters, but I would also call Corporate in NY. They seem to respond better to parental anger. At least that's been my experience.

We're dealing with a different kind of College Board screw-up. Full report to be posted here if it ever gets unsnarled up.

My son had a similar experience with May 2006?s AP exams. All his scores were 5?s except for those in his best subjects, which were 2?s. Since he had accommodations to type his essays, we called the collegeboard?s Students with Disabilities office to ask about the discrepancy. They said there was a clerical problem at their end and that the essays for those two tests got separated from the booklets and they were sent to scoring incomplete. To make a long story shorter, they found the essays for one exam but only half of the essays for the second test. Eventually, my son cancelled the results of the incomplete test. The completed test was rescored, and his score changed from a 2 to a 5; he got the verbal word at Thanksgiving. They immediately upgraded his scholar award, but we didn?t get the written score confirmation until December. The lady we dealt with was as helpful as she could be, but apparently this problem affected a couple hundred students this year.

Bottom line: if there is a score that doesn?t make sense, by all means ask. The review will take forever.

CB also screwed up my S's May 06 AP scores and their error created problems. His college only gives credit for 5's and the bio score determines which intro bio is taken. Eventually we found out S had 5's on Calc, Bio and Geo but too late to enroll in the correct Bio class. Perhaps CB should use some of their fee income to reimburse us tuition!

In July 06 S received scores from CB of 3's on Geo and Bio and a 5 in Calc. There was NO indication that multiple choice sections of bio and geo had not been included. In mid September CB wrote that "he didn't fill out the bubbles correctly" so only his essays were counted on the Geo exam and oops once they added in the multiple choice points he got a 5 not a 3 (he had an accomodation for word processing the essay portion due to dysgraphia.) A phone call confirmed that his bio score should have also been not a 3 but a 5, but we never received a confirmatory letter regarding this score. CB insisted the corrected scores had been sent to home and his college but the scores were never received. Finally after weeks of fruitless calls to CB, I paid the rush fee and the scores were sent. By then S was a month + into the semester, to late to change the course.
