**AP Government 2012 Thread**

^I agree. I think it’s a waste of time n money.

depending on what you intend to do in college, all those AP classes might end up saving you thousands of dollars in tuition and books. It isnt necessarily a waste of time and money as long as you pass and get college credit for it

^No, I highly doubt that the 21 AP classes would even count for AP credit. He won’t even need to take those classes in college let alone even having the college accept them for credit.

^not all 21 exams, but many, at least for most of the colleges that I’m applying to. Some APs don’t count for credit in college, but the money for those exams specifically is insignificant when compared to college tuition. And honestly, APs don’t take that long to self study - one semester is suffice  (and yes, it’s still possible to have a life/free time, just takes some time management)

Yeah, you’re right. It’s pretty hard, though, to control yourself.

I’m SO excited for AP U.S. gov’t! History and gov’t are definitely my thing (5s on WHAP and APUSH) and this year i get my absolute favorite teacher! There isn’t any busy work but you still learn a LOT.

Taking next year!
This is the first time it’ll be offered through an online course at school, so we’ll see how it goes.

I’m hoping to self-study USGov this upcoming year (I started this summer). I’m still unsure if I should get an actual textbook, and which one to get. I already got the PR review book and may try to get CrashCourse eventually. But the PR book looks so short and skimpy, it doesn’t seem like it would be anywhere NEAR enough for complete self-study preparation.

I’m actually really excited to self-study US Gov because I think it would help a bit in APUSH and because I’m trying to understand better and be more active in politics.

hi liveforscience!

Hey liv4physicz! Still love your username!

yours is great too!

Not to be cocky, but I already know that I’m going to get a five on this one. My AP US teacher told me that I could walk into the test and get a three without any prep or studying whatsoever. What can I say, politics is my thing.

no, that’s not cocky at all… :)

I’m taking it next year. I’ll be in the class in my HS but I’ve heard the teacher didn’t teach anything, and AP scores in my HS (all subjects) are low. I’ll have to do a lot of self study but I’m determined to do well.

Oh man, there’s already a thread for this?

What review books have you guys heard are good? My dad and sister, who’s also taking AP Gov (among other APs) next year, just literally bought a scam after me trying to convince them otherwise–some girl came to our house, selling a textbook full of 8 different subjects’-worth of McGraw-Hill 5 Steps to a 5…is this company any good? Has anyone used it? It’s literally in the form of one large, collective textbook, and includes APs neither of us is taking, and neglects to include all subjects we’re taking. I feel like they felt bad saying no. Is Barron’s the best for all subjects?

@liv4physics nah barrons isn’t good for all. prep books are all written by different authors, the only thing uniform about any particular prep book company is the format and the name brand.

I’ve heard that the REA Crash Course is exdcellent for AP Gov, and also Princeton review (but I’ve heard that one’s unnecessary.

^ Yea, I agree - Barron’s isn’t good for all subjects, but is great for some such as AP Psychology and AP Human Geo (I’ve heard different opinions about this one, though).

The only book I’m using is Crash Course for AP Gov, lol. :)

Watching (and reading) the news and understanding what they are talking about is the only test prep you will need assuming you have a solid background in US History.

Can i self-study AP us Gov with just Princeton review & the past FRQ’s? i took APUSH this year and got a 4. Assume i have kind of a limited knowledge of politics but definitely this is not new to me.
