AP Lit summer reading?

Oh yeah, we have to "be very familiar" with the Bible.

things fall apart.... my brother read that in 10th grade at his old school... but at his new school it was considered AP.. it's not that hard of a book... then again.. although i don't speak language, my parents do

Ha ha, in my AP Lit class everyone was just assigned a biblical tale and had to summarise it; we had it all bound in a book. I did Cain and Abel and gave everyone pictures of James Dean. Who knew Genesis could be so sexy?

Are you Nigerian, GAclassof2008?

the once and future king

huckleberry finn

wow, some of the books you guys read are things we read in sophomore/junior year... that's weird how that works. then again probably vice versa. anyway: count of monte cristo and fathers and sons. i'm also in humanities where i'm reading lysistrata and agamemnon... exciting... haha

Lysistrata... wow. Have fun with all the bawdy humor, especially if you use one of the weird translations out there...

For my AP Lit class our summer assignment is:
A Prayer for Owen Meany
Pride and Prejudice
The Things They Carried
A Free Read (I might do 1984)
Letter to author of a book (contest)
College Admissions Essay
Essay on first three books

Oi Vey, and I'll be at CMU for 6 weeks!!

Last summer I was required to read Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte). Then we were given a list of choices for a second book... I ended up picking Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoyevsky).

Brave New World
Wuthering Heights
In The Time of the Butterflies
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Then write an essay about each.

Wow... One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is really good!

Anyhow, I have
Wuthering Heights/I
*Crime and Punishment

Invisible Man

Inferno, from the Divine Comedy - Dante Alighieri
Othello - Shakespeare
Ceremony - Leslie Marmon Silko

We don't have to write anything though! All we have to do is read them, then find critical articles about them and summarize the articles! Yes!

I didnt think the how to read like a literature proffesor would be read so much....and alot of these books were freshmen and sophomore reading for me like cry the beloved country, things fall apart and the count of monte cristo....and this is the first year we dont have to read the bible at my school...

crime and punishment
of mice and men
the stranger
oedipus rex
three books on Greek mythology - We have a list of events, people, etc. that we have to memorize - ex. their stories, lives, etc.

Song of Solomon - Toni Morrison
Mr. Vertigo - Paul Auster
China Boy - Gus Lee

Kind of arbitrary imho.

i read the poisonwood bible the summer before junior year. barbara kingsolver is fantastic.

they changed the ap lit (senior) reading tho to
- the things they carried
- beowulf

we have to read Dante's Inferno and then we were given a big list...
i decided on long day's journey into night
and their eyes were watching god

crap, do we have to read books over the summer for AP LIT? nobody told me anything

I already took Lit, but at our school, as a summer assignment we were forced to read:

Jane Eyre
Hard Times
Native Son
Othello
King Lear
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Heart of Darkness
and 1 book of our choice,

plus a 35 page compendium summarizing important characters, themes, and plots.

^^ Bleh, I hate Heart of Darkness.
Well, I hated reading it. I hate it somewhat less in retrospect. We read it for senior year (AP Lit is Jr year).
