AP Music Theory...how hard?

How hard is it to possibly self - study AP Music Theory? I’ve had 5 years experience performing piano, and 4.5 years piano theory lessons, I’m on Basics of Piano Theory Book 6. How would I fair in the class/self-study?

I wouldn’t. I was going to try the same thing but our schools theory teacher advised me to take his Honors Theory class before AP because of the advanced mechanics that really need classroom dedication. If you want a 5, I’d take the class or a pre-AP class for it.

If you are using the theory books by Julie McIntosh Johnson, it’s definitely recommended that you be at least at level 9. Five years of piano is good, but it would be much easier for you to have a couple more years under your belt before you approach AP Music Theory. I would not try to take the course in a classroom setting, let alone self study it (I’m at level 8 in theory) just yet.

Hi! I myself have not self-studied it, but I’ve heard that it’s difficult to self-study AP Music Theory and get a decent score if you do not have perfect pitch (or a very, very good ear) since there is an aural portion of the exam. I would wait, get to a higher level in the theory book, then consider taking the class.

You could probably fare (note correct spelling  ) OK in the class, but as noted aboved, it would be a challenge to self study at your level.

I wouldn’t say that. It might be more difficult, but perfect pitch is not necessary.

@skieurope haha thanks for catching that! I’m typically really tired when I type up posts here, so mistakes happen too often

@codemachine @photogeek8 @dragonfruit18 thank you so much for your responses, I really appreciate them! I have decided not to take the class or self study it.
