I am currently figuring out my senior schedule. In college, ill be majoring in chemistry and minoring in music. So far I have taken ap language and composition, ap chem, and ap statistics. I will be taking next year ap calc, ap bio, and ap human geography. The only ap I am debating is ap lit. I am thinking about dropping ap lit (3/4 of the year) to English 12 (1/2 of the year) honors to make room for orchestra. Next fall I want to apply to a few reach schools: Harvard, Princeton and Brown university. Do you think that dropping from ap Lang and comp in junior year to English 12 honors in senior year will look bad on my transcript and lower my chances to get into my top schools? Thank you for anyone's honest opinion!

If I were in your situation, I would drop AP Human. It might be interesting and an easy AP class, but being in your orchestra all year would be better as a prospective music minor.

I have to take ap human geo to graduate (I need a world history credit). If I participate in outside orchestras would that make a difference?

I agree with the previous poster. AP English is more important than AP human geography. The latter is a freshman course in place of AP world history at the high school where I work. If you plan to minor in music you should definitely be in an orchestra -at school or in the community. Also, some schools will let you use AP English credit to replace freshman English.

I need a credit for world which is the issue.

Don’t you want the AP credit? However, if you are more interested in orchestra and think it would be a lot more enjoyable, you should drop it! I don’t think it REALLY MATTERS, because it seems as though you’d probably already have plenty of AP courses that you’ve taken. (Unless you haven’t taken that many, then you probably should keep the AP class),

Sorry, our posts must have crossed. I understand why you need AP Human Geo now. Sure, outside orchestras count! I think they actually count more than taking the orchestra class for credit because they show initiative and may actually be at a higher level than what your school offers. An outside orchestra or chamber ensemble would be a terrific thing to put under activities or extracurriculars on your application.

Well how long have you been in orchestra if you been doing it for 3 years already I would just keep the orchestra in my opinion that shows commitment and I think it might count as rigour

I’ve done chorus for 2 years and orchestra for 1. I want to minor in music so I chose to take the different music classes my school offered

Outside orchestra definitely counts! I think in some way, it might be better compared to inschool orchestras like Apollo said if you can’t take it at your school then do it outside because colleges really do want to see some sort of commitment.

Ok good. I’m currently part of a youth symphony orchestra and a chamber ensemble

Talk to your orchestra teacher, maybe you can get the music and still play with them in performances, I know this has happened in my schools orchestra when issues have come up.

I did and my teacher said that if I’m not in the class then I can’t play.
