AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C

I plan to pursue a doctorate in physics, and I am interested in taking AP Physics classes. My school only offers AP Physics 1 & 2, and I am taking #1 next school year. However, I have read that AP Physics C is preferable for those interested in physics and engineering. I will be enrolled in calculus next year, and I have access to a textbook on calculus-based physics. Would it be reasonable to take the AP Physics 1 class for credit, while studying from the other textbook, and then take the AP Physics C exam alongside or in place of the AP Physics 1 exam?

Just take the corresponding C exam in place of 1/2. You’ll have to learn the calculus applications yourself.

You can take whichever AP exams you wish.

I’m not sure what you mean by reasonable, but I don’t suggest you take the physics C exam with the physics 1 course. If you are strong mathematically, the concepts in physics 1 will be easy enough to understand without calculus. I think when people say that physics C is preferred for those interested in physics/engineering, they mean that it will make a better foundation, not for getting into programs or anything. Since you don’t have calculus, trying to take the exam will only potentially lower your exam mark, and maybe confuse you.

Many students also do not use their ap credit (even if they get a 5), particularly if they are going to a top university, because what is covered on the ap exam isn’t always enough to replace a proper university course (though it might be sufficient, depending on the individual student’s level of understanding).
