AP Physics C: Mechanics

Hello everyone,

So senior year I plan my schedule to be:

AP English Literature
AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C: Mechanics (debating)
AP Comparative Government
AP Spanish
Latin 3
Electives

I want to major in linguistics in college, and even though I am taking a lot of APs, I want to show colleges that I can do well in all subjects (even in Science, which I don’t like). But because of my interest in linguistics, I am doing both Spanish and Latin.

As you may see, I am debating on whether I should AP Physics C: Mechanics. In sophomore year, I took Honors Biology and got a 97. In junior year, I took Honors Chemistry and got a 95 and AP Environmental Science and got a 96… I have not been fond of science, but I will do what it takes to get a good grade.

Considering that, I have liked Physics (lol middle school physics), but I am not good at math. In my school, the highest math class is AP Calculus BC, but I am only doing AB. I also heard that if you don’t have a high motivation (which I don’t, motivation level is mid-low) and not good at math, this class is death. Should I change to Honors Physics?

I would like to know your opinions about my situation, and I will not be making decisions based on your opinions, but take them into consideration.

Thank you in advance

There are topics in Calc AB you need to know in order to take AP Physics C. People with very strong math skills can take both classes at the same time. Since you are not strong in math, you should not take both of them at the same time. Honors Physics is more reasonable. Your schedule is already heavy.

@coolweather thank you very much for your advice i will take it into consideration

@davidyekwonkim having taken Physics C - Mechanics in HS, it definitely needs a good math background, and you might have a hard time early on since you don’t have a calculus background. Taking honors physics should be fine.

I have also taken linguistics in college, and didn’t immediately see any physics (mechanics) involved.

Hi! I’m actually in the same boat as you–I’m planning to major in linguistics (so I’m taking Spanish and Chinese), and I’m taking AP Physics C and AP Calc AB. So far, AP Physics has been a lot of work, and if you really don’t enjoy science (imo I don’t think you do), you may want to take honors physics instead. Also, there have been some calculus topics that have come up that I haven’t learned yet in Calc, so since math isn’t your strong suit, I’d shy away from AP Physics C.

Sorry if this post is ramble-y (is that a word?), but I hope you get what I’m saying.

@MITer94 thanks for your input!! i really appreciate it! i’m kinda leaning towards to honors physics but i dont know for sure yet but thank you!

@Faultystart hello!! so at my school high school starts from 10th grade and when your in 10th grade, you have the option to choose Latin or Chinese. I chose Latin, but now I’m regretting not taking Chinese cause it is very useful and fun to learn! and you’re so right about me not enjoying science i didn’t like it in middle school at all! thank you so much for your response!
