I'm taking the AP Psych exam this year through independant study. I was wondering if you could recommend any good study books. So far, Barron's seems to be the most popular book, but I'm still a bit uncertain about wether I should buy it or not. Some say that Barron's is the best, some say that the PR book is best, some say that Barron's is best in combination with PR, and some think that 5 steps to a 5 is better than the others. Just say what you think, and I'm gonna buy the book that seems to be the most popular. By the way, I already have a [very ancient] Psychology textbook: Gleitman's Basic Psychology 2nd Edition. It was published in 1987.

1987 is kind of old for psychology....if it was math or something, it wouldnt matter, but psychology changes.....if i were you i would check out your local goodwill or value village for a newer book.....this summer i got a 2002 psychology textbook for about four dollars.......another popular study guide is REA, but barrons is better.

I second andreaaaaa, you might want to get a newer edition of a psychology textbook. I think you should stick with Barrons and you should be fine.

Thanks for the input. I ordered Barron's. Do you think I would be fine even if I didn't get a new textbook? From what I've heard, Barron's is more than enough.

I didn't study too much before the exam and I didn't bother to buy a test prep book because I thought the textbook/study guide combo was great and I still got a 5. :)

Yeah, I've heard that Myers is a good textbook. Thanks a lot!! I will buy it if I need it or if I find it used/at a good price! Was the studyguide for the textbook meant for AP, or was it just a book that helped you enforce the concepts covered in the book?

The study guide was just meant to go along with the book to reinforce concepts. There were a ton of practice tests and fun exercises (like crossword puzzles) for each chapter in the study guide that really helped me learn the Psych vocab (a big part of the AP test) and concepts well.

It's a pretty thick textbook, but there are a ton of pictures, cute comics, and other cool things like that included in the book which took up a lot of room. The pages are wider than those of an average textbook because the bolded vocabulary terms are all listed on the sides of the pages. The textbook is really well written, so it's an easy read. :)

Thank you so much!! I will probably buy it if I feel that the Barron's book isn't enough. Thanks a lot to all the other people that posted! If anyone else has anything else to add, it would be great!

Yeah, I'm also self-studying for AP Psychology and I did read some concepts from the Barron's book during this summer, but when is it wise to self-study for the actual AP exam so it would be fresh in my mind? Also, should I buy the AP Psychology vocab. notecards by sparknotes?

I'm taking AP Psych this year and we also use Myer's (and the corresponding study guide) Personally, I find the study guide very helpful. It has several practice quizzes for each chapter, lists of terms to know, study essay questions. I use it to review before every test and I've gotten nothing below an A- on the tests. I'd def. recommend it!
