What's teh difference between these two AP services? Why would anyone witholding their scores (which costs money) instead of just cancelling them (which is free)??

"Grade Withholding
You may have one or more grades withheld from the report sent to the college you indicated on your answer sheet. To have a grade withheld from the indicated college, AP Services must receive your written, signed request by June 15 accompanied by a $10 fee per grade, per college. If your request is not received by June 15, the grade is automatically sent to the college indicated on your answer sheet.

The grade will be withheld from any future grade reports sent to that particular college. You may later release the grade to that college by sending AP Services a signed written request.

If you later decide to send an AP Grade Report to a different college, however, you need to contact AP Services to have the grade withheld from that grade report.

A request to withhold a grade does not permanently delete your grade, and all exam grades, even those withheld from grade reports sent to colleges, are sent to you and your school."

"Grade Cancellation
Grade cancellation deletes an AP Exam grade permanently from your records. Grades may be canceled at any time. However, for grades not to appear on the current year's grade report, AP services must receive a signed letter requesting cancellation by June 15. While there is no fee for this service, your exam fee is not refunded. The grade report that you and your school receive will indicate that the grade has been canceled."

I'm asking because I am thinking about self-studying a science AP. So if I get like a 2 on the exam, I can just cancel the scores after seeing them, rite?? So there isn't too much of a risk taking an AP exam after self-studying rite (except for the test fee)?? Also, I need to understand the difference btween grade cancelling and grade witholding. Can some1 explain to me under which circumstances would u use each AP exam service??

If grades need to be cancelled by June 15 so they won't appear on the current year's report will you have seen them in time to decide? I think the earliest they are available is by phone starting on July 1st. You might want to contact them directly to ask your question. AP: Contact Us

FWIW I think AP grades are used mainly for credit/placement rather than admission so you might just want to wait until your senior year to send a single report till the school you're attending.

cancelling- equivalent to erasing your grade on that one AP test. So after you take the test and you know for a fact that you completely tanked it you can cancel it and it will not even appear on the report that they send you on July 1st- if you cancel it before June 15 that is.

withholding- only applies to when you're sending the AP report to a college. So let's say you want to send an AP report to College X but you got a 2 on AP Chemistry but you don't want College X to see that 2 so you withhold the score from that particular school for that one report. However, the grade is very much intact on your record and if you decide to send it to college Y you'll have to pay another 10 to withhold it from that college too.

You don't need to send official AP score reports for college admissions -- just self-report your scores in the "other" section of the app. You don't have to report a 2, or a 3 to a highly selective college. Once accepted, colleges won't care if your AP score report has a bunch of 2's, you just won't receive any college credit.
