AP Scores

Do they matter?
I.e: does 2 5's and 3 4's look bad? (2 of the 4's were self-study).

Self-study makes it better but they don't help that much... depends on what they're in, too.

Keep in mind you don't have to report any AP scores you don't want to report (though if you have the course listed on transcript and no score report, people might wonder.)

This is what I'm looking at:
9th grade: Calculus BC (4, self-study)
10th grade: Statistics: (4, self-study)
11th grade (probable): Physics C M: (5), Biology: (5), Physics C E&M : (4, our teacher barely taught us half of the material)

-Will the math AP scores hurt me if I want to be a mathematician? If I retook the two AP's this year, I'd easily get 5's, but I didn't feel like wasting $160 retaking them.
-Does the Physics E&M score look bad, too?

you should probably find some way of making your math ability clear. since they were self-study, it helps a little bit, but we need to be convinced you can hack it at the highest level. maybe some college courses?

hmm.... complex variables, number theory, linear algebra, calculus III, and college statistics are courses I've taken so far.

I'll be taking Real Analysis 1 and 2 next year if that matters.

A 9 on the AIME, too.

800 Math 2c, as well.

Your other math achievements wash out your AP scores : )

I think they'll forgive that 4 on Calculus considering you took that in 9th grade and self-studied for it! Definitely don't retake it (your more advanced math courses are more important anyways.)

Grades in collge classes: 4 A's and one B (first proof-based course ever). The B won't look too bad, will it?

I just feel very mediocre in everything. :(

meanvaluetheorem1: I got waitlisted (and hopefully accepted, missed a phonecall on friday from caltech admissions), with 2 AP tests. Calculus BC: 3, 3 subscore, and Physics C mech: 3, e&m: 2. You should be fine.

Granted, I had similar math courses (complex analysis, number theory, diffeq, calc's 1, 2, 3, linear algebra, and a problem solving class), I just don't test well. I really had to make up for it with a Lot of other stuff (EC projects and etc.) I estimate that my application folder is about 20-25 pages (including their required pages) of nontrivial material.

If you don't get in, I highly doubt it'd be because of your 4's on ap's or your B in the math class

Thanks for your post, me. I guess I know (deep inside) a few grade or a score won't mattter much in the big picture of admissions...... I just feel very stressed out with admissions lately.

Again, thanks to me?, Ben, and VonWeber.
