AP Scores

Do your AP Scores that you send to UNC factor into your college GPA? I know that for NC State, AP Scores do factor into college GPA (ex: a 3 on an exam would go in as a 3.0 for the class)

No

No they don’t.

@skieurope Thank you for the clarification! A lot of seniors in my school were telling me that this was the case, and 2 of my teachers said that NC State is doing this as part of their new policy for AP Exams

Both UNC and NC State will use your AP scores in certain subjects to award credits and give credit for courses: Like, a 5 in Calc AB & BC, Bio, or Chem will get you 8 credits (two courses), but a 4 will only get you 4 (one course), placing you into the next level. But your AP Scores have no bearing on you GPA. Only classes you take at UNC factor into your GPA- the rest, whether you take them as AP/IB credits, or at your community college, only show as P/F.

@skieurope @blazinamazin2023 @Essel it is true that at NC State for the CODA requirement you can see here they calculate a “success score” based on required classes for the CODA in engineering that MAY convert your AP score into a temporary GPA , not for your transcript but only for the CODA competition. And it’s wonky for example because they allow GPA transfer for AP Physics C mechanics but not electricity and magnetism. My oldest was able to use the AP Calc BC 5 to get “A” credit during coda but since she only got a 4 on mechanics did skip the lab portion and got “A” credit for that, but re-took the lecture. you can read here for math/chemistry/physics and as far as I know UNC has no similar type transfer. https://www.engr.ncsu.edu/academics/undergrad/coda/
