AP Statistics or AP Calc BC in 11th Grade?

I’m currently in 10th grade and took AP Calc AB this year. I’m going to finish with a B average and I think I got either a 3 or a 4 on the AP exam. I want to go into Chemical Engineering as a major and I’m not sure whether to take Stat in 11th and BC in 12th, or BC in 11th and Stat in 12th.

11th Grade AP Course Load:

AP Chemistry
AP Physics 1
AP Statistics (or AP Calculus BC)
AP Language

12th Grade AP Course Load:

AP Government
AP Microeconomics / AP Macroeconomics (1 Class)
AP Physics 2
AP Calculus BC (or AP Statistics)
(Either AP Literature or a Engineering Chemistry at Princeton University)

THOUGHTS???

Hey another chemical engineer major! (I feel like I’m seeing alot of us pop up out of nowhere all of a sudden, before I barely saw any).

Anyways, last year (my junior year) I had the same exact predicament. I was taking the exact same APs as you (with the addition of APUSH) and couldn’t decide between BC or Stat. I remember one of my precal teachers recommending taking calc senior year so you don’t have a gap year between BC and Calc III in college, but at the same time, I heard AP Stat was extremely easy (both at the school and the exam) and I didn’t want to make my senior year too hard.

Finally, I chose BC junior year and Stat Senior, mostly because I didn’t want to work as hard in math senior year. Though another reason was because I was taking AP Physics C (which is calc based to an extent) this coming year so I was treating that as my “calc review.”

Problem is, is that you’re taking 2, not C. Personally whatever choice you’re doing, I would recommend C senior year since youre a potential ChemE. If you switch 2 with C, I would maybe recommend taking BC 11th grade. But if you’re going to keep 2, I would say do BC 12th grade - I was taking more APs 12th grade so I wanted to lessen my workload but you’re taking less so it should be more doable than for me.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions

Definitely take AP Calculus BC junior year and AP Statistics senior year. It does not make much sense to hop from Calc, Stats, then back to Calc. Finish Calc strong while you know the AB material and start something new (and easier) senior year. This will make your senior year not seem so awful.

@Zeppelin7

Thanks for the help, my school’s final course selection deadline was last night. I decided to take AP Stats next year. My school actually doesn’t offer Physics C, and rather than taking an online class, I decided I’ll stick with Physics 2 senior year.

If you don’t mind me asking, where are you going next year for ChemE? What schools did you get into? What schools did you get rejected by?

Actually I will be a Senior year next year (sorry by last year I meant this year because it just passed… not sure if that makes sense haha)

Though taking 2 isn’t too bad. If I remember correctly 2 covers topics like fluid dynamics which isn’t covered in C but is important for ChemE.
