On the AP Test self-report section of the CommonApp, I listed all the AP tests that correspond to my AP classes for the tests I “expect to take.”
However, now that the time to actually sign up for AP tests is coming, my parents don’t want me to take all of those tests. Would it be considered dishonest to not take a couple of those tests?
Colleges don’t give any college credit just for the high school course. Most high schools will “weight” an AP course boosting your GPA. But usually a minimum score of 3 or 4 on the AP examination is the only way you can earn the college credit at most colleges/universities, not have to retake certain courses in college, and may be able to move more quickly through your major. I don’t know of any colleges that accept an AP score of 2 for college credit, but others on this forum may know of some. Depending on how you are doing in the class itself, it might be to your financial advantage to take them and see if your score will save you a semester or two of tuition. If finances are part of the problem you can ask your guidance counselor about their fee waiver policy.
Colleges will not care if you end up not taking the test.
Having said that, the only reason at this juncture that I would not take an AP test is if the college that I have decided to attend does not grant credit for the exam, or if I am maxed out on AP credit. Otherwise, there is really nothing to lose.
There’s the $91 fee. If one is struggling in the class and is confident they won’t do well on the AP without extensive extensive studying (and doesn’t have time for this because of other obligations), the $91 may not be worth it.
