For those of you that have taken this class or completed it independent study, please post the name of the textbook and/or author of the book you studied from. Any recommendations for a book you have will be much appreciated.

peter stearns, world civilizations: the global experience, isbn 0321194470.

i liked it, it was a pretty good book, not super hard to read, but the author is a little weird and there are no questions at the end of the chapter. but i had a prep book so i didnt really need those. good luck with your self study.

I used the Duiker/Spielvogel book called "World History". With that book, and the Princeton Review book, I made a 5.

I also used the Stearns book; it has great 'in-depths' which are just like essays you could write for the AP exam, and there are like 2 per chapter.

Traditions and Encounters
McGraw Hill (publisher)

REALLY good textbook.

Thanks everyone, I will be looking all of these up.

i second stearns...plus the book has a companion website for students that has quizzes and such so you can test yourself on the information...reallllllly useful when studying!

the earth and its people. 2nd edition, bu Bulliet

traditions and encounters
it was ok, kinda lengthy-ish
plus i used princeton and barrons for supplementary stuff

ended up buying traditions and encounters+vol 1/1 study guides, great books.

she should be able to self study but i wouldnt recommend waiting until her junior year to take the test.....its a long time to forget things.

also, at my school, the regular world history and honors world history were really more of a "western civilizations" class......they spent an entire semester on greek and rome and then another quarter on the byzantine empire and crammed everything else into the last quarter......if your daughters class is like this she would have a harder time because the world history exam truly is about the entire world and not just europe.

i would be willing to sell my book, i bought it last year new and all i really did with it was underline the vocabulary words, pm me if you are interested.

On self-studying, I was in Pre-AP world history last year, and I did a bit of self-studying, took the test, and got a five, so it's definately doable. But with non-ap world history classes, she really needs to dive deeper into the subject than her classmates, so quite a lot of outside reading is needed. A good thing to do is to talk to her teacher about it, mine teacher lend me her copy of "world civilizations: the global experience" for me to use, so I didn't have to worry about buying textbooks. I know it really depends on the teacher, some might not be so generous, but it's worth a try.
