I’m interested in joining my college’s chapter of APO (community service “frat”). Can anyone give me some background on what the environment is like? Are the people in it normal or lame? Is it fun?
So I pledged this semester and can only speak to my college’s chapter, but I really like it. People in my chapter seem to be really friendly and inviting. I guess you can say the people are normal, although I would say that a lot of them are a little quirky, but really there’s like two groups of people. There are the people who are really into APO and they get a lot out of it. These are the people who really love APO and make it fun. There’s the other group of people that are generally disengaged. For some reason or another, they aren’t really active and they kinda start hating APO. These people usually go associate and then inactive.
I know the saying is cliche but honestly, you get out what you put in. Pledging this semester was a lot of work and kind of stressful at times (first-semester freshman btw), but I’m glad I did it because there were definitely some fun moments and now it’s basically over except for initiation. I feel like now I’m more connected to my campus and with APO I have plenty of things to do if I’m bored and don’t have any plans. IMO I’d recommend checking it out.
My husband and I were both in APO in college and we really liked it. It was a little more diverse group than the rest of the “frats”. We liked that it was coed, not crazy expensive and we really felt like we were doing things for the community. I recommend it!
