Appeal Financial Aid Award

Some background, I am a rising sophomore OOS at Virginia Tech. Despite submitting all my information earlier this year I have only now received my financial aid package due to some mix up on their end. The award was substantially less than what I received my freshman year.

Direct Subsidized Loan
$4,500.00
Direct Unsubsidized Loan
$2,000.00
Funds for the Future
$200.00

With a:
Estimated Family Contribution
$7,682.00
Need
$25,358.00 (granted actual tuition is a bit less than this)

My award package was roughly double that last year with same amount in loans. I dd not think I can afford to attend VT, short of enrolling in a community college is there anything I can do?

I would like to appeal the package but am not sure what to write in the letter or email. I don't know how much if at all it matters for financial aid purposes but I have a college gpa of 3.78 and just over 60 credit hours.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated, if this thread has been done to death I apologize, I did a quick CC search and google search and didn't see anything.

Have you asked the financial aid office why the offer is so much less than last year? Perhaps there is something missing from you file and that is why the offer came late. My daughter’s initial aid offer was much too low, but only because they were missing some forms.

Fiddlecanoe - were you successful in getting more aid once forms were submitted?

I don’t think VT gives great aid to OOS students. Most OOS publics don’t give much FA to OOS students…except for merit scholarships which are different.

What **exactly **was in your FA package last year?

Were there any one time scholarships in there? Had you gotten some outside scholarships before?

3kids, this thread is over a year old…you might start a new thread or send fiddlecanoe a PM.

Ahhh…missed that.

BTW…the OP transferred to UNC-Ch…they do give good aid.
