appeal letter (Financially not academic)

am i allowed to ask for help with my appeal letter? I need help writing a appeal letter that is based on my parents income/assets.. not because of my academic grades...

so if i am allowed to ask for help, i'll post my ideals of what to write in the letter.

Have you tried calling the financial aid office? From what I’ve heard, that may be the most effective way to make your case. If they need supporting documentation, they’ll tell you.

Does the college guarantee to meet 100% of students’ documented financial need? If so, let them know about any things they may not have considered: high medical bills that your family is still paying; a parent’s having lost their job since the financial aid paperwork was filed, etc.

Most colleges don’t guarantee being able to meet 100% of students’ demonstrated financial need, and given the recession, may not offer you more money even if your letter makes a compelling case for your needing more aid. The only public university I know that guarantees meeting 100% of students’ demonstrated financial need is U Virginia.

I applied to SUNY by eop

i got rejected by university at buffalo because my mother assets exceeded the state guidelines…

i assume that the reason why the asset is high is because my mom owns a house and the mortgage is all paid off.

so i am writing a letter appealing.

one thing i want to mention is that i got accepted to SUNY brockport (eop) and why did i get rejected by UB… (well, brockport did not ask for asset information, but still)

also how the house was purchased and was paid off a long time ago… (i think 1995) not sure but i’ll recheck it

so are these good reasons to put in my appeal letter?

You can put those reasons in, but it’s very unlikely that you’ll get more financial aid. Those schools can’t meet 100% of accepted students’ demonstrated financial need. Also, at many public universities, the students who get the best financial aid are the in state ones who apply earliest and also are at the top of the applicant poool.

The fact that your mom’s house is paid off means that you are in better financial shape than are probably most students who apply to college because most students’ parents still have a mortgage. What the college would expect your mother to do would be to do what many parents do – even if they haven’t paid off their mortgage – borrow money including against the equity in their home.

um… northstarmom… your misunderstanding… i’m not trying to get more financial aid.
but it’s not your fault… my situation is complex… i assume that you don’t know about SUNY and EOP… so i don’t blame you… hopefully someone who knows about EOP can help me… thx northstarmom!

Try posting in the financial aid section, and putting something like “Appeal letter for financial aid to SUNY college” as the subject.

Best of luck!
