So i had been anticipating my last grade that i was waiting on to be at least A- or hopefully an A..only to see that i got a C...***?

There are two midterms worth 25% each, a final worth 30% and 10 quizzes totalling 20% of our grade.
I got 84 and 85 on the midterms, lowest quiz grade was 8 and im not sure what i got on the final.

In addition to these, he gave 3 extra credit assignments, each worth a max of 5 points which would go on to your midterm/exam grades, i got 5,5 and 4 for a total of 14 points.

So technically, you could say i got 94 (84+10) and 89(85+4) on my midterms.

You are allowed to miss up to 6 classes (lol) of which i only missed around 3-4. AND he says he is able to move your grade up or down by 5% if you made good attendance, good participation and added insight into the course (which i did, hence why i was hoping for him to raise my expected "A-" grade to an A).

Now, i've yet to hear back from him about what i got on the Final, but can someone explain how it is even remotely possible that i got a C in this class???

One time I had a professor transpose my score on the final. I got a C in the class when my lowest grade had been an 84. Turns out he wrote my final was a 29 instead of a 92. If you do contest the grade, be sure to do it in a very amicable manner. Don’t be confrontational, they probably didn’t do anything on purpose.

It’s definitely possible if you didn’t do well on the final. Even if you had gotten 100% of the points up to the final (you didn’t), that’s only a 70.

In your case, your grades going into the final look like this:
.25 * 94 = 23.5
.25 * 89 = 22.25
(You didn’t give us all of your quiz grades, but assuming you got a 100 on everything except that one quiz…)
.2 * 98 (average for all quizzes) = 19.6

Total Points: 65.35

You’d have to fail the final (get around a 35%) to get a C but it’s definitely possible.

My advice is to wait until you find out what your final grade is before you contest anything.

Except that if you fail the final you fail the course and since i passed the course (C apparently) then i didnt fail which makes no sense.

And the final consisted of 3 questions, 1 of which we knew beforehand and im certain i got full marks on (30/30) and theres no way i got 0 on the other 2 questions seeing that im not a braindead zombie lol.

Im supernervous now that i may have forgot to write my name or answered the wrong question or something…

I have to say, expecting an A-class grade and being hit with a C, even if it is by mistake, is such a crushing feeling :(

I emailed my professor and he has yet to respond even though he normally gets back to me the same day (its been 3 days). Does this email come off as offensive/rude or is it okay? I sent it when i was emotionally charged i guess because it was such a shock to see the C on my transcript. Do i send him another email apologizing, etc. or do I wait? Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh the email was:

Professor [X],

I’m writing this email to inquire about my final grade, which I thought would be much higher since i felt i did very well on the final exam. I didnt miss 6 or more classes, got i think 85 on both midterms, my lowest quiz grade i remember was an 8 and i did all 3 permittable extra credits, so i’m a bit confused as to how i ended up with a C. Sorry to disturb your holidays!

That’s a polite email and one he is likely to respond well to, but next time edit your emails a bit (use proper capitalization and grammar). In any case, if you emailed him 3 days ago that means you emailed him on December 27. Two days after Christmas. It’s the holidays! I wouldn’t expect a response until January 2 at the earliest. When I TA’ed a fall class we handled all grade changes in early January.

Okay, so he responded saying that according to his records, i missed 9 classes and the syllabus states that every class after 6 misses drops your grade by 5% (so a total of 15%, hence the C). Now, i am 100% SURE i didnt miss even close to 9 classes, because im a responsible student and since very other course allows me only to miss 2, i knew 6 would be easy to avoid. Secondly, his records show that i missed every wednesday class except 1, which is FUNNY because we have a quiz almost every wednesday class (9 in total) of which i’ve only missed 1. See how that doesnt add up? How did i complete those 8 quizzes which he recorded the grades for if i wasnt even at the class that he gave them?? I hope he’s not out to personally sabotage me…

Please advise me on how to proceed/respond.

Do it politely, and like fluteloop says, but the work on you, not him. Give him the list of dates or the proof or offer to meet with him at a time that he picks-- as much as you’re upset/angry about your grade, make it as easy as you can easy for him to see the mistake and change the grade.

This looks like a problem you can fix. Just continue chatting with him through email until he is willing to change your grade, which he probably won’t be able to do until the second semester begins. If he doesn’t cooperate, take it to an advisor, and if the advisor doesn’t cooperate, then good game, just live with it and tell it as a story to your grandchildren.
