Appealing Need Based Aid

So I sent in my letter, copies of other aid letters i've received, and I think I have a decent shot of getting more aid.

The problem is, time keeps on passing by, and I have still yet to hear if they've even received my request, if they're thinking about it, etc.

Should I call the admissions office? Financial aid office (where I sent it to)? My admissions counselor? Should my parents be the one's doing it?

Contact the financial aid office to confirm that they did receive your information. That question alone will prompt a response that of yes or no. If yes, then they will let you know when you can hear a response.

Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking

Be proactive!

What are your chances of a college giving you more fin aid if you appeal??? We just mailed out stuff today and they told me that their comittee will meet in 10 days and let me know.Is this a pretty common thing??? There was a $6700 difference in financial aid from one school to another. We are hoping they come close?? ;)

It depends on the school.

Are you negotiating need based aid against need based aid.

Did both schools use the same mechanism for calculating FA. Did one school use the FAFSA only while the ohter used the FAFSA + Profile/their own institutional aid form.

Does both schools commit to meeting 100% demonstrated need.

I would also look up your schools on the college board website to see where your package lies as far as the average package including percent grants/loans the school gives.

I won't speculate on your odds of improving, but I can guarantee your odds if you don't appeal... 100% no chance.

Actually I did- they don't say they would meet 100% need . The School that offered a really good package states they meet 92%- they also use their intitutional form and FAFSA. The school that was $6700 more expensive only uses FAFSA and they say they meet 93% financial need. I am hoping for my sons sake they come through and offer more. He has to pay for his own education as we just can't do it. We paid for private school for him since he was in 2nd grade and have way too much debt. I don't want him to start off life having soo much debt. He really really wants to go to the more expensive school. Their full tuition is almost identical if you have to pay the full ride. Their endowments are not even close. Funny thing the school that offered him the most aid(financial & merit aid) has 1/2 the endowment of the shcool that didn't. Go figure!! ;) Their standards are identical as far as grades and SAT's . Oh well I am gonna try-- can't hurt!! Let me know if any of you have any insight

To first appeal your finaid package, should you call the finaid office and ask to speak w/ a rep, or the admissions officer who admitted you?

Actually I called the fin aid office and before I could really explain my situation he answered my question and told me what to do. He must get a lot of these calls ;) He told me to send the other offer and sign my name as they needed a signature from me(His parent) Also this specific school has a form for the admissions office where they want admission info whether you are considering that school, awaiting fin aid conclusion and a list of schools you are considering and their order of preference.Which they need postmarked by April 10th. So we just put down we were deferring our decision until the financial aid offer was done. So that way the admissions office is aware of the situation. I will be calling the admissions office in a few days and calling the fin aid office to make sure they recieved the info. I am gonna try real hard.
