Apple Computers

Hello everyone,
i noticed that a lot of people seem to be getting apple computers for stanford? in the approaching stanford booklet, i seem to remember that they mention that around half of the students use apples to do their work on. what i was wondering then is, is it really reliable to buy a mac - are most programs compatible with it? if not, which ones aren't? i ask this because i bought an ibook back in 99, and soon experienced the problem of having a very limited choice of programs i could run on it -___-. also, it was very hard to get my documents in various formats across different platforms. is it safe to say that problem has been solved now? hope im not asking something too obvious, i'd just like to know because i'd like to buy a powerbook, but it's a sizeable investment and i dont want to regret it later on. im looking forward to seeing all of you in the fall :)

WAKE UP !!! It is 2005, not 1999, and Stanford is in Silicon Valley, home of Apple Computer. Yes, you will see a lot of Macs, iBooks, etc. on campus and there is plenty of software available for the Mac platform. I am not an Apple user and am not a hater (like most pc users seem to be).

According to the Stanford Residential Computing website, the school has negotiated hardware and software deals for students, including Apple and Dell laptops.

Just look at any online computer store for available Mac OS software titles, i.e. CompUSA...

well said...
i just bought my powerbook and i love it!!=)

My ibook came today, and I'm already totally converted. It's great... the only problem (and this is silly) is that I can't right-click to open up a new tab off of a link the way I got addicted to doing on my firefox/windows combo. Oh well, c'est la vie, n'est-ce pas?

Entropicgirl: With your trackpad, you can still Cmd+Click a link to open it in a new tab or window. And if you hook up a three button mouse, the middle button should open links in new windows (it does in Safari; I haven't tried it with Firefox).

haha alright. what i meant was that for example, i've found that DivX isn't yet compatible with Tiger 10.4, which is what powerbooks work on now... I meant to find out about this type of thing, whether it applied to any other major programs. thanks anyway... i'm sure i'll enjoy a mac no matter what
