Hi guys, I am applying to Anover, Exeter, Deerfield and a lot other schools. Are the applicant essays very important? Will I still get accepted if I screwed up the essays? Are the interviews very important? What is the most important an admission officer consider? Is it the SSAT or school grades? Can somebody make a sequence of those from the most important parts to the least important parts of the Application process?
Yes of course they are important. So are grades and SSAT/ISEE scores. If English is not your first language then a TOEFL score may be required as well. Additional factors that can impact admissions include your race or ethnic background, whether or not you need financial aid, your state or permanent residence and what else your offer in addition to your grades and scores: i.e sports, musical ability, special talents or skills etc
Probably not, unless you have an extenuating circumstance.
How could you possibly write 16 essays?
Applications are viewed holistically, meaning the applicant is seen as a whole and there is no certain value to any part of the application. Don’t go crazy trying to come up with a magical formula.
The question isn’t are they important, but what’s important about the essays? Or how can you use them to be a compelling applicant? If they weren’t an important piece of the application process, the schools would not request them.
Because they are an important part of elite college admissions, the same applies to BSs. They want to see if you can write, if you can convey a message and if you care enough that you polish your essays with correct grammar and punctuation.
I think they are also important if they convey you are humble, not a braggart, and are in some ways both a regular person and interesting at the same time. Good Luck! Andover says they want “nice” students. Be nice. It’s one way to convey this.
Every other part of your application are either statistics or other people’s perception of you, which may not always be right. So the essays are really your only chance in depicting who you truly think you are, along with who you hope to be.
Be nice because that’s the right way to be, not because some BS says so.
It’s kind of an inside joke, because Andover doesn’t have the monopoly on “nice” kids. I like to think that many if not most of them are all at Choate
