Applicant POOOOOOLS

Are applicant pools for Fu Eng and the College different? As in, if there are multiple people applying from one district or school, they would be split into whos applying into which?

Would competition still be direct with those applying to a different school?

THANK YOU

Applications are considered via regions, which are then broken up into piles based on smaller demographics which are read by several people. You’re not in direct competition with your HS classmates for any sort of “quota” for said school. The only thing you’re in direct competition with among your HS classmates is rank(if applicable).

Yes, you apply either to Fu or Columbia College.

so would competition for Fu and the College be completely different? Our school doesn’t rank by the way.

It seems that there’s been a consistent amount of columbias from our school (2-3) so it does seem like there is a quota… applying to a different school would have different competition right?

okay, this is completely irrelevant to the content of the post, but it’s not “fu” and the college, it’s SEAS (fu foundation school of engineering and applied sciences) and CC (columbia college).

That being said, SEAS tends to have a slightly higher admit rate than CC. When open up the Columbia supplement to the Common App, it will ask you to chose which school you’re applying to. SEAS and CC applicants fill out essentially the same application with the exception of the last essay - I’m CC and mine was about what I want to study, I’m sure the SEAS version is similar if not the same.

Because there are two different applicant pools, the “competition” for SEAS and CC spots is indeed different. However, as DowneasterDad mentioned, Columbia splits up the applicant pool into geographic regions. I doubt that Columbia has a specific quota per state/region, so instead of focusing on the other applicants, I’d work on writing and re-writing your essays.
