So, at the moment, I'm studying for the AMC 12 that I'm taking on Tuesday, and I generally am getting scores between 84-95 (haven't broken 100...yet) on the tests from previous years. Assuming I get a 90 on the test on Tuesday (and therefore, don't qualify for AIME most likely), and, since results supposedly arrive in late Feb/early March, I send the score to Harvard, will it even matter if I'm applying as a humanities major? I guess the question I'm getting at is, since I'm applying as a humanities major, am I mostly competing against other people who applied as humanities majors? If so, then would they simply look at my AMC score (mind you, I got a C in the last math class I took in HS, so I'm wondering if they'll do the same with that haha) and be like, "That's nice," and then disregard it, and then proceed to evaluate me in the context of my intended major, putting limited focus on anything not related to it, and compare me with other humanities majors (also under that same context)? Or, do applicants compete with the entirety of the applicant pool, not only within specific sub-groups? Sorry in advance if any of this is incoherent in any fashion.

Do keep the admissions committee updated on any significant awards or honors you receive between the date of your application and the date you receive their admissions decision. You are being evaluated against the entire pool of candidates, not just against candidates interested in humanities or candidates who have specified the same intended major. Excellence in any of your academic and extracurricular endeavors counts, not just excellence in endeavors related to the humanities.

Like you, I had stated an intended concentration in one of the humanities, and I had not been particularly stellar in math (just not that interested in math). However, by junior I had pulled my math grade up to an A and had placed in my state math competition. I’m sure the math award was a plus for my Harvard application.

I don’t think it would help much. 80-95 is good but not really significant. If you get 100 or higher though, then definitely submit, since AIME is a good achievement.
