I wrote one page and an extra paragraph, single spaced. I didn’t really use citations, except for introducing who said what and when if i used a quotation.

They don’t want a research paper; they want to see how you think and try to understand you as a person through your ideas. Focus on the “indicate why YOU think it is important and what YOU suggest should be done to deal with it”

Yeah, I wrote mine editorial style. I started with a few statistics at the beginning, but then focused on my feelings about the issue, and how I would deal with it. I really do think they want you to focus on the second part of the question (why it is important to you/what you’d do about it) rather than in depth research on the topic. Whether or not you have a sufficient knowledge on the issue will be apparent in the way you talk about it, so go with your gut!
That’s what I did, and I was accepted. Best of luck with your essay and the rest of the application process!

mine was one page, single spaced. I started out with background on why i was interested and what the issue was, and closed that paragraph with a sentence about my solution. I then developed the solution in detail until i ran out of room!

best of luck, i think its a really neat essay that teaches you a lot about what you’ll do at SFS!
