I am an International student and have the following queries :-

1)What is the format of the recommendation letters written by the teachers ? . Should it be hand written or typed? . Can it be typed on a normal piece of paper ? .

2)How do schools indicate the class rank of the students? . I have a very high class rank and a low GPA. Does the school have to make a document for me to submit to the colleges? . If so then how should it look? .

3)Can I photocopy my class rank , official transcripts, recommendation letters to provide to the colleges ?

Please give me detailed Info as my school does not know all this. All format and sample recommendation letters and class rank documents are needed.

1) There’s a recommendation form for teachers to use, which has a few multiple-choice and short-answer questions as well as space for a letter. Your teachers can either write their letters on this form, or write a separate letter and attach it to the evaluation form. If it is on a separate letter, it is preferred that they use a school letter head.

2) There’s a field on the school report / counselor recommendation form where your counselor can state your class rank.

3) Feel free to photocopy. However, make sure that every document carries an original signature. (I.e. photocopy the documents before your teachers sign them, and then ask them to sign.) Official transcripts should carry an official school seal or whatever it is that makes them official. Colleges prefer transcripts that state all of your grades on one sheet of paper, rather than 8 report cards each covering one semester’s worth of grades. (I don’t know how this is handled in your school system.)

Do you not intend to apply online?
Okay, its like if your teachers have email ids, when you go to commonapp, you tell them the email address of the teachers you want to fill in your rec for you.You give them the teachers’ email id, and then those teachers will get a mail from common app, an account created and stuff, and that way they can send in the recs online.
Then the official transcript you scan and send to your counselor/school offical, and they can upload it on common app.
On common app, they ask the counselor about your rank. He/she fills in.
I’m talking about doing the stuff online, don’t have much idea about the other way.

The documents that i have :-
My report card having my grades and teachers remarks . that’s all . I have to make another document specifying my class rank and grading scale used by the school and et the official seal of the school on it ?

I really think you should try to get internet access. The online process is far simpler and less likely to give you problems…
Not sure how to do this without the net. The forms are on commonapp or the university websites
Your transcript should have both GPA and class rank right?
Yes, I did it and didn’t have any trouble. I didn’t have a signature either but the universities didn’t mind this.
I really recommend you do this online (if you can participate in this forum, you do have internet access i guess!).

I am in an Internet cafe . But the online process requires the teacher and the couselor to have email ids

the problem is that my teacher are not so modern and they most probably will mess it up . I am an international student . The main problem is that my school does not have a counselor

Hey its ok if your school doesn’t have a counselor… assign any teacher as your counselor… i know people who did this and didn’t have trouble… its your best bet.
You could ask your teachers to accompany you to the internet cafe, create email ids for them, ask them to type everything out and supervise the whole process. Or something like that :D

I wondered about this one too… My teachers had email ids with moe.edu.sg (Ministry of education Singapore) so it was okay… But I did wonder what happened to those people whose teachers used gmail or yahoo

Hey, at some schools counselors create email ids for teachers who don’t have them and then operate them. If you’re on really good terms with a teacher, maybe you can make an account for them on their behalf, type out everything and just ask them to fill up the final evaluation for you?

phyz thanks a lot for your help and hope that you will further assist me on this when i am applying . Currently i am just collecting all info . Thank a lot

CC is the best for ppl like me

Thank you all and please members give me your take on it too

Anytime…
free, I still don’t see how the college authenticates the email id. He could do everything and write glorious recs without the teacher’s consent
