Application Prep

So as a junior in high school, I’m compiling a big list of colleges I want to apply to. As I want to prepare for the worst possible situation I have a long list of colleges. I’m a US citizen but I live in Canada so I’m a little unclear about how it works. Can I start working on my application in the summer going into my senior year? Or does some application open when the school year starts and I have to wait until then? If I can work on it over the summer I can make sure my application is well thought out and I can put my best effort into it. I’m worried if I’m given that small of a time frame I won’t be able to make a high-quality application.

The Common App opens 8/1. Colleges mayor may not have their supplemental essay questions ready by 8/1. Often, the supplemental questions are unchanged from year to year, but not always. The timing for colleges not using the Common App is generally similar.

So the short answer - it depends.

So for most colleges, I can do the information part of the application in August, while the essay questions will require waiting, right?

Like I said, it depends. Most, but not all, of the college-specific essays will be available 8/1. And just because a college released it on 8/1 this year does not mean they won;t release it late nest year.

Also note, you can start filling out the general info on the Common App at anytime, and then transfer most of the info over to the 2019-2020 version on 8/1.
