S2 finally got around to his Elon app this weekend and came across the question - "list other colleges to which you have applied". What is the thought process behind that questions?? One of the "rumors" I had heard about Elon (which I didn't believe) was they will reject you if they think you are using them as a "safety". Unfortunately, this question makes me wonder if that is true. It just seems like private information and frankly, none of their business.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight on this issue?

There are other schools that do this (the one I remember distinctly was Boston U)…

It seems unlikely that this one question would cause a rejection given that Elon’s app is so personalized but who knows…

I would like to believe that they just are taking note of their competition…

The question does not need to be answered if your son is uncomfortable…I had one student fill it out and another who chose not to (similar stats)…

You could have your son actually contact his admissions rep (who, btw is a doll!!) and ask her…she would have a better answer than we would here…

Thank you Rodney – I’m probably over-thinking it!! I was pretty relaxed about the application process this time around until about a week ago! S2 is pretty “chill” about everything and his social life sometimes takes priority over this stuff so now that the deadlines are all looming – crazy mommy has made an appearance!

Hi - a common answer to your question is to disclose one or two schools that are either at the same level or slightly lower. I would not recommend listing schools that are reaches - as there is no need for Elon to know they are a safety if that is the case.

It is just data that they use to see against whom they compete. If you are accepted and choose not to enroll they will ask you what school you selected. Elon’s admission process is much more quantitative than you think. “Safety” schools issues, “interest”, financial need, etc do not get considered.

My son is in his second year at Elon and we were told repeatedly in no uncertain terms, both during the application process and after registering, that demonstrated interest is HUGE to them!

We would strongly encourage anyone that has Elon high on their list to not only meet their admissions counselor, but also maintain contact with them throughout the process.
