<p>I've heard that Harvard is usually fairly strong for theoretical aspects of the subjects. Can anyone comment on its applied math department? E.g. how is the Applied Math with Economics concentration for people who are considering business/finance/iBanking later? Also, how is that concentration for Economics grad school?</p>

<p>Applied Math with Economics is the one area of applied math I know something about. The concentration is very strong and well-respected; its graduates do well with recruiting for ibanking etc., but so do plenty of humanities majors. One of my very good friends was an Applied Math concentrator with an economics focus, and he was accepted directly into the PhD program at Harvard Business School and from there into a tenure-track faculty position at U Chicago B-school.</p>

<p>Hmm, I not so sure about Applied Math, but as for Pure Math, Harvard is the place to go.</p>

<p>I don't know about the lower-level math courses, but my S has been taking 100-level courses and has always been taught by profs, assisted by undergraduate course assistants in a couple, and by graduate TAs in another. The ratio seemed to be 1 CA or TA per 10 students. They led review sections and graded quizzes and exams. Very helpful and knowledgeable.</p>
<p>How is Harvard compared to Stanford in mathematics fields? This includes both pure and applied math, especially in the context of Economics.</p>
<p>Dotty, high-school-level math courses may be taught by TA's. If you've had calc in high school, you'll place out of those classes.</p>
