Apply as current high school exchange student??

Hello,
I'm Aaron from Germany and 16 years old. At the moment I'm enrolled at a high school in the US in grade 11.
My idea is the following: when I come back to Germany next summer I've to spent 2 more years in school since I won't get academic credit for my year in the us. So I'll be a year older than the other students, I've got the exchange experience, so I might be more mature than other students, could be annoying for two years. I hope I'll Improve my English in the next time and I'll be fluent when I leave the us. Wouldn't it be great to go to college after my exchange year?
My grades in Germany were always A+ or A, just a few Bs (I'd 12 classes in Germany at the same time) and I think the academic level is much higher compared to us high schools. Even in AP classes...
I'm currently enrolled in an psychology AP, pre-calc and anatomy honors class.

Do you think my academic background is appropriate for college?

I spent a few hours of research. One of may favorite Colleges is the ASU, just because I live in the Phoenix metro area and I know some people here ;) it seems that they don't require s high school diploma. Just SAT, TOEFL and transcripts. Do you think I've got a chance to apply for college, since I won't have an high school diploma, neither German nor us. But I can take the SAT test fore sure, the TOEFL, probably get some recommendations and my schools can send my transcripts directly to the college.
The main question is: can I apply to a college with my background (exchange student, good grades, good English in one year, but no graduation)

And do you think it's a good idea to apply for a college, or should I leave the us and stay two additional years in school as expected? I'll be Just 17 next year, is that too young for college?

And if there is the chance to apply (fall 2012 or spring 2013), what are the next steps? Should I call or mail my favorite colleges to ask if I had the chance to go to college, should I ask my high school counselor first or just register for the sat and TOEFL test?

Hope you understand my situation and can help me with your opinion!

If ASU doesn’t require a high school degree, it sounds like a good idea to take the SAT and the TOEFL and apply to Arizona State, if you can afford it. A lot of 17 year olds start college.

Ask your exchange coordinator if this is possible. It might not be. If you have a J-1 visa, you probably are required to leave the US at the end of your program, and cannot have a new F or J visa for two years.

So apply for college might not be a problem but apply for a visa…

I’ve heard that before, I just found the following statement on an US DoS homepage:
“You can apply for a student visa in your home country or change status to student after legally entering the US under other type of visa.”
What does that mean?

Update:
On my visa is printed the following: “two year rule does not apply.”
Does that mean I can extend or change my visa?
