All of the universities that I am applying to give you the option to do the essay. I would like to do the essay, because although it is optional, it is recommended and I would like to increase my chances of getting accepted. For some of the schools I am applying to, like UNT, I cannot write the essay because it only gives you the option of doing Essay C, and I do not yet know for sure what I would like to do in the future. However, other schools give me the option to do any (or none) of the essays. This is where my question begins! My mom died when I was 11 and I felt that that related to topic B the best. The only problem is that I don’t know how. I don’t know what to write about, what specific points to discuss, all I have right now is the main subject which is “my mom dying when I was 11.” Please help! please!! I don’t know how to write this essay
Is this the prompt? -> Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life, and the skills and resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?
Yes!
Here is one way to get started: brainstorm off the prompt guides. (I prefer mind mapping, but use whatever tool you are comfortable with.)
I’d begin with the phrase “describe a circumstance, obstacle, conflict in your life” and see how many bubbles I could generate describing how I felt, what was going on around me, and so on. Again, I’m just making lists or bubbles. This must have been an emotional moment, so it may be painful to go too deeply here. If so, then I’d move quickly to “skills and resources you used to resolve it.” Make bubbles/lists of how you overcame your pain. (Or whatever question you wished to use to frame it.) Then move to “did it change you” and lastly “how”.
At this point, I’d have 5 or 6 pages of bubbles. So now I compare my lists/bubbles and see which items overlap or have the potential for full development. Then I take 2 or 3 of those items and brainstorm again.
After I review those connections, I usually have some type of insight about what point I want to make in the essay. I also have the seeds (bubbles) that will be used to develop my point into a full essay.
For me, figuring out what point I want to make is usually the pivotal step. After that, the rest kind of falls into place. Good luck!
thank you! I just don’t really know what to say about it. I just don’t know what to write about meaning like I don’t know what the circumstance would be. If it’s my mom’s death, I can’t write about how I solved the issue, because it’s not like I brought her back to life haha
