I'm applying for Fall 2014 admittance to UMD. I have interests in Film and Business/Marketing,however, I do not know what I want to major in yet. Should I apply Undecided-business, undecided-Letters and Sciences, or College of Arts and Humanities-film? I know the business program is LEC, but if i apply business-undecided does that mean I'm in the business program? Also if in the business program, how hard is it to switch out?

I would strongly recommend applying to Smith if you have any interest. You can always drop the program.

I know people that were frustrated they had to sweat out the internal application process, when they could have just been directly admitted.

“but if i apply business-undecided does that mean I’m in the business program”

No. Smith School of Business is a LEP (limited enrollment program - meaning limited number of spots offered) and is EXTREMELY competitive. You can apply to the business school and not be accepted to Smith School of Business, yet still be admitted to the University itself.

It’s easy to transfer out of business… but transferring in requires a separate application after you matriculate and is also very competitive as an internal transfer.
So, that’s why TerpGuy suggested going for Smith when you apply and I agree.

Your best chance for consideration for both the University itself and for the business school is to apply by the Nov 1st deadline. Best of luck.
