Can any parents provide suggestions regarding applying to colleges/universities as a dance major and/or give suggestions or a template for a good dance/artistic resume?
I suggest you visit the Dance Major forum on CC:
Dance Magazine has an excellent college guide. Really helpful. I also like a book entitled “Creative Colleges” that includes dance, music, theater, writing, visual arts.
What kind of dance is your child looking for?
If your child is applying to conservatory/BFA, of course there will be an audition, and clear guidelines for applying.
For colleges and universities with a BA in dance, or even if your child is applying for another major, but is interested in dance to some degree, it is well worth doing an arts supplement. This can include DVD’s of performances (or perhaps one performance that best shows talent and level), resume that includes teachers, classes, workshops, summer programs, performances etc. And a letter from a company or school director, teacher or other person who knows your child well as a dancer and as a person (work ethic, focus etc. in addition to dance ability).
Non conservatory schools that come to mind include Vassar, Skidmore, Goucher, Sarah Lawrence, Bennington (focus on choreography), Barnard…well there are many more.
As for conservatories, I could list some, but it is pretty easy to access them. If that is the route your child wants, let us know and we can help with that.
Dance forum is good here but not always that active. PM me if you like.
UC Berkeley offers a Dance major: http://tdps.berkeley.edu/programs-courses/undergraduate-program/
There’s a board called Ballet Talk For Dancers that has separate threads for every college dance program as well as general higher education advice.
