Applying for Need-Aware Fin Aid difficulty?

I'm an international student and I'm not sure whether I should be applying for financial aid to a school that is need-aware for international students.

Duke, JHU and UChicago are all need-aware for internationals.

If I apply for FinAid, but am not competitive enough, will they deny my aid, but still admit me without aid?

How much more difficult is it to get in if I am applying for FinAid vs not applying for FinAid as an international?

Applying for finaid will definitely hurt your chances, depending on the school, maybe it'll completely destroy them.
If they are unable to offer you finaid they will probably just reject you, because there's just no point in admitting a student who can't pay.
