how bad is it to apply past the deadline? should i bother? deadlines were 12/15 and 12/31.

Not good at all. Especially if you’re competing for funding.

Likely not worth it as most programs won’t even accept your app (though they may accept the processing fee). Either apply to programs with later deadlines or wait til next app cycle.

Call the offices before you send them an application. I recently spoke with a few admissions officers who told me that graduate school, unlike undergraduate studies, is a lot more lenient/flexible in terms of accepting late applications, especially if you are qualified for the position.

Certainly, calling to ask them wouldn’t hurt.

This can vary between programs. For instance, I believe the University of Arkansas doesn’t even have a deadline any more. Surely there are others with a rolling admission or more forgiving admission policy.

ok, i will probably call and see. one reason i was considering it is because my friend got into 2 grad schools last year that he applied to a month late. i already applied to 6 schools on time but found a few more that i wanted to add last minute.

It probably also depends on the competitiveness of the programs. If they won’t be funding you and accept 70% of their applicants, they could probably care less about their deadlines as long as you’re well-qualified and get it in within a couple of days, but if we’re talking about a competitive field where only 3-5% of applicants are accepted in the first place, you could be a prodigy and have your application ignored b/c it was late. In clin psych, it seems that most programs with deadlines in mid-December are already beginning to make phone calls and send emails to invite students to interviews. I would expect most of those invites will be done by the end of the 2nd week of January since many programs begin interviewing in late January or early February.

I think a lot depends on your program, but I would advise looking at schools with later application dates so you have a fair chance instead of a weak one simply b/c you were behind the 8-ball.
