I'm currently a student in an accelerated med program, and due to personal reasons, I think I may have to apply out of the program in the future. It's not a definite option by any means, but I am in a program which holds my spot at the med school if I don't get into the med school of my choice. I was just wondering how difficult it is to apply out of these med programs with only 3 years of undergrad work. Is it recommended to stay the extra year?

If you have/will have a degree at the end of 3 years, then honestly I see no point in staying for another year to take classes for no added benefit.

If during this time you still have a sufficient number of ECs comparable to other med applicants, then you should go ahead and apply. If not, you should take the gap year to build on ECs.

You’ll most likely be asked why you decided to graduate in 3 years instead of 4. And they’ll also be looking for maturity, since you’ll be younger than the majority of applicants (I assume anyway). But I think you should be fine if you have completed the “pre-med checklist”.

I have a friend who is a year ahead (skipped a grade in elementary/high school, but still did college in 4 years) and that person despite a younger age has been accepted to numerous top medical schools.
