Hi!

I heard that if you submit your application early enough to some colleges, even if you're applying RD, you'll get lumped with the early applicants. Is this true?

Thanks!

“Is this true?” Criteria for Early admissions is different. Why would they take on more work than they need to – and then have to evaluate you differently? It doesn’t pass the smell test.

For colleges (such as most of your high ranks) that actually have you choose on the application whether you are applying early action or early decision as opposed to regular decision, the answer is no. However, there are many colleges, particularly a number of public universities (examples, Illinois, Michigan, Gtech), that have early action programs that are often called something else such as “priority date” applications, under which anyone who applies by a certain date, such as Nov 1, will get an early decision, usually in Dec. Thus, the fact that you apply early automatically puts you in that group.

It makes a difference in rolling admission schools as well.
