Applying Test Optional

Anyone have any experience or advice re: applying to AU test optional?

S is interested in AU as they have a program (Audio Technology) they are strong in that is not offered at many schools. 4.0 unweighted, lots of APs, ECs, etc., but not great on standardized tests. 24 on ACT. Just took again yesterday, but highest on practice tests is 26, so not expecting a huge improvement. At 26, would still be outside of middle 50%.

So, I suggested to him applying Test Optional. Just curious how that is looked at by the school.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I got accepted to American SIS last year after applying test optional. I was in the same boat. I didn’t score very high on the tests but good GPA, grades and very good recommendations from teachers and boss from work.

My tip is when he is writing his essay mention the degree he is interested and why he wants to do that degree. The essay is the only place where you can show who you are. Mention community service and interests outside of school. Focus supplement essays as well. Also show a lot of interest. If there are any presentations in your area or you have a chance to visit the campus go to them. Email your admissions rep for any questions, and apply for information online. If he knows he wants to go there and it is his first choice then definitely apply early decision.

The only thing is that I got accepted to spring admission so I start in January. I’m not sure if that is because I did test optional or for other reasons.

I think that he will have a good chance if applies test optional since his stats are way above my own and it’s only the second year since they started test optional so there might not be that many applicants applying test optional.

@Sjamal Thanks very much for the response. Good advice focusing on the other areas of the essay. They made a point when we visited there to state that applying test optional would not negatively impact a candidate - just takes some getting used to.

Good luck as you start in January!
