Applying to a different major than what I talk about in supplementals?

I’m having second guesses about my decision to major in political science, but a lot of my supplemental essays talk about my interest in politics and some of my schools’ politics related programs. If I choose tech majors on the commonapp form, would that be a bad idea? Should I change my supplemental essays?

Edit: My commonapp essay does talk about something tech related so idk if that changes anything

In my opinion, it’s totally okay to show diversity of interest. It makes you look like a more interesting and well-rounded candidate. Schools typically know that students don’t stick with the major they select on their application.

@onceand4all thanks, I’m assuming that choosing a major on commonapp is not binding whatsoever. Do you think it would be a good idea to edit my essays so they at least reflect my interest in both majors? I feel like it’d be odd for me to put Computer Science as my first major and then my supplemental talks about how much I love politics and look forward to the schools’ political programs!

Some schools have you apply to specific majors so research the schools on your list.

IMO, you do want your application to tell a cohesive story about who you are and your interests. You absolutely can have varied experiences, ECs, etc… but again, know your audience.

We have no idea what level of colleges. Yes, it will be noticed by the more competitive. They may think you didn’t put much effort into your app. Or into the particular college’s supp.

It’s ok to show dual interests. But don’t leave them confused. Many schools will code your app based on the major you name. Yes, you need to ake a decision and do your best.

Also who knows…maybe you are interested in applying tech to political science.
