Applying to Duke, Stanford

I'm preparing to apply to these two schools, and I suddenly realized that I might want to consider more. I'm currently enrolled as a freshmen at Caltech, but I've found that my interests have shifted quite a bit from the pure science, and I want to explore some more options. Obviously, Caltech is a very focused place so I was hoping to apply to some big name colleges without going to a large public institution. I probably want to go to Duke the most, but the problem is that I haven't gotten any grades so far in college. Since the first two terms of Caltech are on pass/fail, I don't have a GPA even though I think I did decently well. I also don't know too many professors, so I plan on getting one recommendation from my high school teacher. I'm not sure if that's a great idea though. The other option is getting a rec from a professor who teaches about 200 students in a huge lecture room. My high school grades were decent (3.9 uw gpa, rank 3) at a competitive school known to Duke in NC. 2300 SATs, 12 APs (all 5). I do want to try another school next year so I don't want to wait for Junior transfer. What other schools should I consider? Thanks in advance for input!

what other academic areas are you interestred in?
U Chicago takes in approx 40-50 transfer students each year, so you may consider them as well, if you want an intense educational environment with a broad based undergraduate academic program. Chicago is known more it's "theoretical" slant in Math and Physics, but you will come out prepared to excell in any grad school program.

I'm actually slanting away from the theoretical sciences, and Caltech is known in that area. It seems though that UChicago has a good econ major and maybe some other humanities that I'm interested in. I forgot to ask how unlikely or likely would you consider these schools to accept me? thanks

I would say very likely, IF in your essays you let them know why you really want to be at Chicago. Chicago has one of the top Economics programs in the country. Do some research, and PM me if you want to know more about transfering to Chicago[ my son did this year, and there are some down sides that you should know about]. Also know that it is a very intense academic experience, much like CalTech & MIT. Duke and Stanford are much more laid back. FYI- Stanford only accepted 20/1400 transfer applicants LY= less than 2% chance. Duke would be easlier for you to get into.

thanks, i'll have to think more about uchicago. i know stanford's a reach, like all the other ivy's for everyone. I was hoping more for duke, does anyone know more about the typical accepted applicant from these school? i'm kind of interested to know where to place my hopes. thanks for your help!

When's the deadline for Duke? Their website says it's 15th, but common application says it's 17th.. Does anyone know?

I've just received an email telling me that my HS transcript and report are missing.., that I must submit them by 18th, and that they need to cancel my application if it's still incomplete as of 23rd. They've obviously lost them, because I've got a delivery confirmation. Anyway, I'm going to telephone today and check the latest status of my application, but is there any way to keep track of it online?
