Applying to MBA and Horrible Math Grades

So I got a C- in Calculus I, D+ in Calculus II, and B in Statistics... I am a rising sophomore at an Ivy League and I was wondering if this pretty much kills my chances for a top bussiness school?

Probably for the top 15. A “D” may be the deal breaker. Didn’t you go to tutorials?

Assuming that your GPA may also be low, you may need a very strong resume to overcome this. Get at least 4 years of top job experience and take a few quant classes down the road, get A’s and explain that you’ve matured and able to handle math better.

Can you retake Calc II? At some schools you can take it again and the second time replaces the first grade. That’s your best shot, I think.

Good luck.

How exactly do I “explain”? In a letter, interview? Let’s assume my GPA ends up being around a 3.5 and i work for at least 4 years?

An MBA application will include essays requiring you to tell them your story including why you need an MBA, what you plan to do with your degree etc. You can address any weaknesses and strengths in your academic, work history.

Some schools (like state schools) I have heard will let you take the class again and wipe out the lower grade but I don’t know whether an Ivy would let you do that if you’ve completed the class.

More than the GPA issue, is that fact that you might have to find a way to improve upon your math skills. I would recommend that you sit down with someone in the math department at your school and figure out a way inside or outside of class for you to develop a better understanding of math, which will enable you to be more successful in your classes and in business school down the road.

What about taking calculus and statistics at the post-baccalaureate level? Maybe enrolling at a local university some time after I graduate and try and Ace it. Would that be much help?

What puzzles me is why you moved on to Calc II, when you got a C- in Calc I. (Which frankly is not a passing grade, IMHO).
