Applying to Oxford University with US qualification

Hello all,

I hope you are all staying safe with coronavirus. I am currently preparing to apply to oxford university in the UK from a US college to theology and religion major.

My qualifications are 1570 SAT, 800 US History, 800 Math 2, 800Chemistry, and 780 Korean.

Despite the fact that I do not have any APs, I am currently attending a US University with a relatively good reputation (not ivy) but one of the UCs with good gpa and such, with a lot of experiences in theology and religion.

Do you think I have a good chance of getting in?

Thanks.

So you’ve done one year already and are going into your second year? A close to 4.0 GPA plus two years at a decent UC (eg UCSB/UCSD) will probably be enough to get an interview if you do well on any tests/written work.

But the bigger question is why bother starting again after 2 years? Why not just finish your degree in CA and get a second degree (only 2 years) or an MPhil at Oxford? Not sure what you think is a “good” GPA but if you aren’t currently on track for a 3.8-3.9 GPA then you are unlikely to be admitted either way.

Yes. My gpa is around 3.8 in one of the schools you mentioned. And I want to have an undergrad degree from oxford. (I will be going into my second year next year).

It seems to me that completing your degree in CA then doing a second undergrad degree at Oxford in two years might not be much different cost-wise, especially if you can finish 1-2 quarters early (assuming you are in-state). So I’d consider that too: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/second-undergraduate-degree#

Remember also that you need a reference from a current professor, not your HS. Is that going to be feasible?

But you seem qualified. Whether you would actually get admitted is impossible to predict, and it is far from clear how interviews (and even admission tests if applicable) will work this year. It is strongly advisable to attend the interview in person, but travel will still be difficult in December, and if you do an interview online I think the outcome is even more uncertain.

Yeah thanks for your advice. Hopefully, interviews will be online for all candidates because I am almost certain my school won’t give me a pass for missing school, let alone interview at a another university. Especially being in a sports team, we don’t get a break. Do you know general dates for the interview, though?

Early December. From the provisonal timetable, 6-9 Dec this year for your subject: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/interviews/interview-timetable

Another question though- how will I let them know of my college gpa in the qualification section in UCAS? if not, where do I let them know (of course I’m going have my professor mention my grade) but besides professor.
