I agree wholeheartedly with your comment on the MAPL schools. They are outstanding academically and are easily comparable to some of the better known New England schools. I would not sell them short and would highly recommend any prospective applicant give them a close look. Incidentally, their selectivity is also very high and becoming more so each year.

I missed another MAPL school that should also be included in my last comment. The Hill School is also an outstanding school.

Any info on the Winsor School in Boston? Our daughter is applying to the lower school (5th grade). There is info on acceptance rates for the upper grades but not for the lower school.

S is at a MAPL school- would be glad to give info via PM. He is in his second year at the school and is a senior. I have experience with several boarding schools and can not speak highly enough of this school.
Not that anyone on these boards would be so-inclined, but DO NOT consider the boarding school in Austin, Texas, which I will not name right here.

I believe that Winsor, an all-girl school, was founded in the early 1900's by the sister of Frederick Winsor, founder of Middlesex School.

You guy's are right. Presently looking at Country Day Schools for D and i'm in that mode as they only go to ninth grade. After that, D will be applying to Boarding School. Secondary placement Counselor is important in that case.

Does anyone here go to Hotchkiss?!?!?!

I'm applying there, but I was wondering how snotty the place is.

I can't tell you about attitude, but are you just applying to Hotchkiss? Are you applying to others. It might be a good idea to take a look at several schools. I do believe that last year on this thread, that mention was made that alot of new yorkers go to H and that this may have led to some attitude issues as per the person who conveyed the opinion. I want to make it clear that I'm just being the messenger here and it is not necessarily my opinion.

I'm also applying to Western Reserve Academy! I'm touring it on the 29th! Take the SSAT's on the 10th of December!

Goodluck hotchkisshopeful!

Spinach:another good school information site that goes beyond matricultion statistics for boarding schools is www.boardingschoolreview.com ... that was along with the CC archives was a God send inhelping me discover information about these schools

Good Luck! I wish you well on your SSAT and interviews. Im not familiar with casewestern, What is it that appeals to you?

Western Reserve is an excellent prep school. It is outside of Cleveland and the campus is supposed to be gorgeous. They have really strong academics and strong athletics with good facilities. It doesn't come on the radar screen that often on these boards because it is in the midwest. It is a nurturing environment with a great administration. It was highly recommended for S when we were going through this process.

Western Reserve Appys to me because
1. It is so close to home (45 minutes)
2. the Academic's are great!
3. My family can still come to visit me, see my games, proformances, and if someone in the fam. died (heaven forbid) i would be close to home.

I was recently going through the Peterson's prep book comparing year 2005 and the current 2006 edition. I noticed that Milton academy went from 1300 plus application in 2005 edition to a little over 800 applications in 2006 edition. Any ideas as to why such a huge drop in their apps. This drop would have occurred before last years sex scandal. So if you were thinking this may be the reason, well not so.

Here are my stats! lol
Academics- 8th
A's and a B
"Advanced" math

How can one assess the writing skills before taking the standardized tests? Any internet resource available for prep school applicants? I would like assessment at the high school application level rather than college application level. As parents, how we can know where your kids really stand other than school progress reports. Public schools definitely do not do enough on writing and the grades on language art may not quite reflect the writing skills there.

With the BS students or graduates, can you share your thoughts / experiences on how writing skills play the role in your success?

Tips for interviews anyone ?
What kind of questions do they ask... I have one this Saturday.

^Try searching on this website...I remember there being a thread/topic about this awhile ago...

My kids just took the tests for private school entrance "cold," with no prep for writing. We did buy the SSAT book that you can purchase when you register for the exam & my kids did spend some time looking at it (both were accepted into very selective "prep" schools for entering 9th grade).

You can pay a private service like Sylvan or Princeton Review or similar types of groups to evaluate your kids' writing and tutor if you feel it's appropriate. Some folks sign their kids up for a writing course over the summer & that can help as well.
