applying to PSU: Smeal School of Business or College of Liberal Arts?

I have a junior interested in applying to PSU. She would prefer to enroll in Smeal Business School, but if not admitted would consider studying economics in the College of Liberal Arts. Is it possible to apply to both programs, so she still has the option of attending PSU if rejected from the undergrad Business School?

The “safest” thing to do is apply to the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) which is essentially “undecided”. She won’t have to declare a Major until second semester Sophomore year, so before that she will simply need to make sure she fulfills all of the entrance-to-major requirements (Specific courses, gpa, etc.) in order to get into a Smeal major. This would also work for Economics as well.

I graduated from PSU (University Park) in 2007, so if you have other questions, please feel free to ask!

Dear Warrior1183, I noticed that my son was admitted at University Park as written in acceptance letter saying “Business (Undecided)”.
Does this mean he has been admitted to Smeal with major undecided which he need to decide major at the end of Sophomore?

I you are correct. I don’t think anyone, especially not Smeal majors, can actually declare their major before being accepted into it. They still need to take certain classes (Econ 002 or 004; Accounting 211; etc.) before they can start taking major related courses.

Thank you all for your kind advice and input. Obviously, we haven’t investigated deeply enough the structure. On first look, we assumed the Smeal Undergraduate School of Business enrolled students as freshmen with a specialized track Please forgive me for asking what must be an unnecessary question!

The question wasn’t unnecessary. We are here to help. At least you weren’t the last person I replied to, who was complaining about a 10 min. taxi ride from the airport to campus, while also getting the name of the town wrong…

Smeal students admitted as freshmen are actually guaranteed admittance into the Smeal School of business provided they meet the required GPA requirements for their major and complete all of the prerequisite courses by the established timeline.

I would recommend applying to the school of business, since it is harder to transfer into once enrolled. You can identify Economics as a second choice.
